The group currently focuses on original modern jazz compositions (w/ occasional covers of Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Rick Margitza, Roy Haynes, Don Alias, Mike Stern, Kei Akagi, et al). BMP, like many other jazz groups has been heavily influenced by the likes of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk and Charlie Parker. In live performance and in the studio, BMP focuses on the solid delivery of each melody, i.e., laying the foundation theme of the composition while taking noticeable excursions to provide audiences interesting, interactive and spontaneous dialogues between the several voices (i.e., the instruments). This spontaneous creativity, which requires as much listening skills as it does playing skills from participants, is termed "conversations with the rhythm section" in many circles. During the group's creative improvisations the underlying traditional roles of support and lead are in a constant state of directed flux between each of the band members. BMP consistently brings its unique blend (fusion) of New Mexico Jazz to the TEXAS JAZZ Festival including Traditional (Straight-ahead) Jazz, Funk, Modern Jazz, Latin, Rumba, Urban and Polyrhythm. BMP has appeared at the Texas Jazz Festival for 16 consecutive years (since 1996). They now reside in the Albuquerque/Santa Fe area of NM and travel in and out of the state to perform at Jazz festivals throughout the US. |
