Band Name = The James Douglas Show Genre = Funk, R&B, hip-hop, soul Band
Members = James Douglas - lead vocals Band Bio = The James Douglas Show, a pioneering band in the genres of alternative soul and new-school funk, is one of many national acts attempting to bring an old-school creative mentality to a new breed of artists. Currently based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, The James Douglas Show has garnered national attention not only because of their ability to entertain audiences of almost every demographic, but also because of their tight and precise musicianship and incredible work ethic. The James Douglas Show’s music not only appeals to listeners of R&B, funk, soul, and old-school, but the band has also won over fans of pop, blues, rock, and even country! Formed in 2002, The James Douglas Show quickly gained popularity in the Albuquerque area’s club scene. By performing a combination of original material in addition to their own energetic arrangements of cover songs, The James Douglas Show’s fan base grew exponentially in the first two years of its existence. The band’s first demo disc, It’s All About You, was a critical success as an independent release. The title track of the album became the band’s first single, and two other tracks, “Am I Losing You” and “Forever,” held the positions of #1 and #2 on MP3.com’s Urban and Adult Contemporary charts. The band toured the southwestern United States, capped by performances at the Urban Network Summit in Palm Springs, California, and the famous Antone’s music club in Austin, TX. In 2006, The James Douglas Show released their highly anticipated and critically acclaimed debut album, Garden City Music, on Bungalo/Universal Records. Songs on the album range from the funky yet sexy “Baby I Know” to the emotional and thought provoking “Remember Me” to the greasy southern jam of the album’s title track, “Garden City.” “Baby I Know” and “Garden City” went on to become singles on Clear Channel radio stations, and are still in rotation on satellite and syndicated radio. Shortly after the release of Garden City Music in 2006, The James Douglas Show became the first and only R&B band to play at the world-famous Sturgis Bike Rally in South Dakota for the first annual Rock’n the Rally Music Festival. The James Douglas Show shared the stage with such acts as Sammy Hagar, The Black Crowes, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Stevie Nicks, Nickelback, Keith Urban, Big ‘n Rich, REO Speedwagon, .38 Special, Wolfmother, and many others. The following summer, The James Douglas Show also became the first and only R&B act to perform at the Country Jam Music Festival in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where they shared the stage with Bon Jovi, Dierks Bentley, Sarah Buxton, and several others, and performed in front of over 40,000 people. By 2007, The James Douglas Show had become one of the most reputable and sought-after acts in the country, performing at casinos, nightclubs, and festivals across the nation. The James Douglas Show was offered the rare opportunity to open for The Whispers on New Years Eve 2007 at the Isleta Casino Showroom in Albuquerque. That performance was so successful, that the band was invited back to open for Philadelphia soul legends The O’Jays the following year. It became The James Douglas Show’s second sell-out show in a row on New Years Eve. In 2008, The James Douglas Show toured as headliners for the After After Party Tour sponsored by McDonald’s Restaurants and Coca-Cola. The James Douglas Show was a featured artist on the After After Party Music Sampler, which was released by McDonald’s nationwide in March of 2008. Also in 2008, The James Douglas Show made their debut performances at Country Jam and Rock Jam in Grand Junction, Colorado, as well as a return performance to Country Jam in Eau Claire. They shared the bill with some of the biggest names in music including Carrie Underwood, Poison, Kid Rock, Tim McGraw, Sugarland, Jason Aldean, Clay Walker, Dokken, Josh Turner, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Starship, and many others. By the end of 2008, The James Douglas Show had performed 117 individual performances and had toured over 80,000 miles. The James Douglas Show’s relentless tour schedule earned them New Mexico Family Magazine and Guide’s distinction and a national reputation as “Albuquerque’s Hardest Working Band.” On November 4, 2008, The James Douglas Show released their highly-anticipated second album, The New Black. The album featured contributions from some of the biggest names in music, including platinum producer Hector Delgado (Eminem, D12, Andre Crouch, CeCe Winans, Angie Stone), award-winning producer and J.D.S. band member Mike Cee (Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, DMX, Baby Bash), guitarist and producer Pocket (Erykah Badu, Wicked Wisdom), R&B sensation and noted producer A.B., and many others, as well as original compositions from all five members of The James Douglas Show. The New Black marked the band’s second release on Bungalo Records, one of the most noted urban music labels in the world. The New Black was a featured release in the R&B/Soul category on iTunes for five straight weeks. The album’s first single, “U,” was also featured on iTunes and was one of the top five ringtone downloads of the year off of the Bungalo label. A music video for “U” was released in November, and has been featured on YouTube and several music television shows. Another single from the album, “What About Me,” has also received major airplay on syndicated radio. In 2009, The James Douglas Show was nominated for four New Mexico Music Awards, which were judged by some of the biggest names in the music industry including jazz saxophonist Gerald Albright, Hollywood producer Danny Kortchmar, Hootie and the Blowfish guitarist Mark Bryan, famed Nashville songwriter Radney Foster, and Grammy and Academy Award winner Will Smith. Despite some very stiff competition, The James Douglas Show took home the New Mexico Music Award for Adult R&B Song of the Year for “U.” Later in 2009, the band embarked on the biggest tour in their history, covering 17 states in just under three months. The band also returned to all three Country Jam and Rock Jam festivals, and was a main stage headliner at the Rock Jam festival in Grand Junction, Colorado. The James Douglas Show shared the stage with Huey Lewis and The News, Los Lonely Boys, Saving Abel, Puddle of Mudd, and the all-star band Chickenfoot. In the fall of 2009, The New Black was added to the official Grammy ballot for consideration for nominations in six categories including Best Traditional R&B Vocal, Best Pop Vocal, Best Packaging, Best Album Engineering (Non-Classical), and the prestigious honor of them all, Album of the Year. The Recording Academy also added The James Douglas Show as a Grammy consideration for Best New Artist. In the fall of 2011, The James Douglas Show will release their fourth studio album, 9, which promises to be the band’s boldest effort yet. The band has summoned the services of some of the industry’s elite, yet in keeping to the band’s aura, committed to creating a masterpiece that is creative, fun, and intense, a testament to the band’s amazing live performances. The first single from the new album, "Wonderfully," is currently in rotation on commercial radio nationwide. In addition, The James Douglas Show is collaborating with legendary Digital Underground rapper Money B. for an upcoming album and live project in 2011 known as "The K.N.N.," and the band is also partnering for a project with world-renown vocalist and reality TV star Romeo Johnson for a new album and live tour! The James Douglas Show is also the house band for the new hit late-night talk show "The After After Party," which stars "Breaking Bad" actor Steven Michael Quezada and airs every Friday night on the CW Network. The James Douglas Show is an ensemble with the extraordinary gift of being able to capture listeners and audiences, not recognizing the boundaries of genres or demographics. No matter where the band plays, whether it is a small club or a huge festival, The James Douglas Show never ceases to entertain and inspire, delivering consistent and energetic performances every night. The James Douglas Show is positive proof that raw talent, creativity, energetic performing, tight and precise musicianship, and an unwavering work ethic are still constant and beneficial factors in the ever-changing music industry.
